It's been a little over a year since Onslaught 1 was released at my blog at viciousgames222.blogspot.com.. Since then I've played it some more, and came to the conclusion that this onslaught by far is the best rendition of me and hitman213's idea ever made.
It's easy to see why..
In previous Onslaughts, the game's protagonist was a total asshole not some kind of gritty mercenary. His voice sounded awful, like a marv albert clone... The artwork was bright, not dark and creepy, and the overall look didn't look right.. The levels were badly designed too... That changed overnight with the beta version released in 2019. Gone were the horrible bad voiceovers, crappy graphics and a new soundtrack was made for it.. A new texture pack was used for it that made the game look amazing... It changed it completely. The voiceovers were re-recorded with a deep gritty voice similar to mine. Some were scrapped, hell a LOT were scrapped and replaced with better ones... The enemies were redesigned to look more like old ideas rather than things that were slightly similar... A lot of the mutants looked much better, like the vampire mutant and musclehead.. Everything FITS in this final onslaught. It seems like it could be the real game, and doesn't feel OFF.. The older alphas felt OFF... This doesn't.. The music, the dark graphics, the gritty yet funny oneliners, and the better enemies combine to make this thing practically perfect. Hell to me this thing completely blows the smithereens out of doom 2016 and it shows.
The gameplay has no stupid platforming, has fast paced gameplay unlike doom 2016, and has good arena battles, unlike Doom 2016. A lot of the levels have gigantic amounts of space to fight the enemies in... You don't get that in doom 2016, you get cramped arenas. You DONT get room to move, a key neccisity in twitch shooters... In Doom 2016 you ended up getting no room to move, onslaught overwhelms you with room to move like Serious Sam did before it.. But this thing aint no serious sam....
Onslaught takes elements of serious sam, but also takes elements from games like STALKER, FEAR and Clive Barker's Undying, and fuses twitch shooter mechanics with Horror elements... The horror elements are mostly in the story text messages, but their there... The scary sounds accent the horror a lot and make it feel dark and scary.
Anyway, I think all these additions and changes made onslaught amazing for a final release.. A lot of people have liked it in #gamedev #indiedev #gamedesign and #pixelart circles on twitter which is amazing. I got not just 1 but TWO people saying they loved how it had a metal soundtrack. I got a lot of people saying it looks good, and have a returning game dev coming back that likes it,... It isn't completely dead, hell it's not popular, but at least it aint dead.......
